[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We get a lot of questions about caring for jewelry, so we wanted to share some of our pro-tips with you!

Jewelry is very fragile, so it’s important to be delicate with it to prevent any stones from falling out or cracking, pieces being scratched up, and chains from breaking (shout out to babies for being the #1 cause of death among chains).[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Top Causes of Jewelry deaths:

#1: Broken chain from being pulled

#2: Stones falling out of rings while exercising/doing outdoor activities

#3: One earring going missing while sleeping/traveling

#4: Discoloration of costume jewelry from being worn in shower[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

#1: Don’t wear necklaces while holding babies or in any situation that requires a lot of movement. They can get caught on things and easily pull apart.

#2: Be sure to take off rings during any activities that will require you to use your hands. Bring in your rings every 6 months to have the prongs checked and tightened if necessary, we can spot any loose stones before they’re gone!

#3: Take earrings off while sleeping. Keeping a jewelry dish on your bedside table makes it easy to keep track of them. When traveling be sure to store them in a jewelry case or plastic bag

#4: Don’t wear costume jewelry in the shower, while swimming, or while exercising. Be careful of perfumes, hairspray, and other body products as these will cause discoloration in costume jewelry as well.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

More Helpful Tips:

We see tangled or broken chains come in all of the time. If your necklace happens to get tangled, you can lay it on a flat surface and use a pin or paper clip to try to loosen the knot.

One of the easiest ways to keep chain from tangling is to put the necklace in a small zip-lock bag, leave the clasp out of the top, and zip closed.

A lot of people have trouble with heavy earrings hanging too low. This can be easily fixed using a pair of larger backs, they keep the earring closer to the ear and more snug.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Cleaning Jewelry

We can always clean up your rings or jewels and make them look as good as new, but you can do it at home too! It’s important not to clean jewelry over a sink, because stones can become loose and fall out. We’ve even seen situations where rings fall down the drain (yikes)! The best way to do this is to hold the piece over a bowl or mug, so that if any stones fall out you can easily find them. You should fill the mug with warm water and a mild dish soap or cleaning solution, then use a toothbrush to gently scrub the piece.

This method can be used for jewelry with stones such as diamond, sapphire, and ruby. It is important to note that any soft or porous stones including opal, emerald, turquoise and coral should NOT be cleaned using this method as it could damage the stone. These stones can be cleaned using an untreated polishing cloth.

Silver can oxidize and turn black but there’s an easy fix to that. You can either polish the piece using a treated cloth, or you can dip the piece in a tarnish removing solution, which can be purchased in most stores.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Storing Jewelry

Jewelry often gets dinged up, tangled, or lost when traveling or storing pieces together. A good way to prevent this is to keep each piece separately in a plastic bag (not pearls). This also prevents it from being exposed to oxygen or dust. When traveling, it’s a good idea to use a jewelry organizer that will keep pieces secure and in one place while on the move. We love this one by Boulevard.
