As we’ve mentioned in past blog entries, the Victorian Era was a very important time for jewelry and the development of personal style. At that time, pocket watches were worn around the neck, and in order to adjust the lengths of the chains women began wearing slides. Slides pulled the chain up or down, came in all shapes and sizes and were often engraved or bejeweled.
Towards the end of the era, when watches moved to wrists, these ornate slides became collectible antiques, and were restrung on double strand gold chains to be worn as bracelets. The most interesting thing about these slide bracelets, is that no two are alike. I bought mine at an estate sale several years ago and love it because it’s entirely unique and a cool way to bring historic pieces into a modern era.
